Women's Champions League: Chelsea reach quarter-finals

Chelsea are through to the quarter-finals of the Women's Champions League after a nervy 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid, winning 3-1 on aggregate. Leading 2-0 from the first leg, a Maren Mjelde penalty finally made the tie comfortable with 15 minutes to play.

Atletico will rue their failure to convert three spot kicks themselves across the course of the tie. England star Toni Duggan blasted a second-half penalty onto the bar only to see Chelsea win their own opportunity from the spot moments later.

Blues boss Emma Hayes was all too aware her side were not at their peak, given the constant demands of the Women's Super League.

"You've seen us at our best with 10 players last week, and even when we weren't at our best, we're still winning," Hayes said.

"That is a sign of a good team. To become a great team, we have to keep finding the other levels. We haven't accomplished anything yet.

"The domestic league in England is so tough. It takes something out of the players.  We didn't have the legs to get into certain situations."
