Women's Champions League review: first leg advantage for Chelsea and City
Chelsea survived having Sophie Ingle sent off after just 12 minutes as well as conceding two penalties as they beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 in the first leg of their Women's Champions League last 16 tie.
Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger saved both of the Spaniard's spot kicks whilst Maren Mjelde did manage to score a penalty at the other end before Fran Kirby ensured the Blues take a comprehensive lead into next week's second leg.
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes told BT Sport: "I said to the team I'm so proud of them. The leadership in my group is unbelievable. I don't know how many teams could go down to 10 against Atletico and do what we did.
"I don't think it was about resilience because we already have that - it was about discipline. I thought we were brilliant."
Manchester City were 3-0 winners at home to Fiorentina, having scored twice in the opening four minutes. Lauren Hemp's header came inside 90 seconds before Ellen White doubled their advantage just two minutes later.
Sam Mewis added the third late on to give City the best possible chance of progressing past the last 16 for the first time in three seasons.
