Superstar soccer team named as Angel City FC
Oscar-winning superstar Natalie Portman chose a suitably showbiz way of announcing the new name for her National Women's Soccer League side, which will be known as Angel City FC.
The Star Wars actress originally launched the consortium behind the new franchise back in July, alongside fellow celebrity investors such as Serena Williams, Jessica Chastain and Eva Longoria.
Portman then revealed the official name of the team whilst appearing on US chat show Tonight with Jimmy Fallon: "We are bringing Angel City FC, the women's soccer team for Los Angeles, to LA in 2022 and we are super excited to be able to showcase these incredible athletes."
The club also announced a raft of new investors, including British actor-turned-US-chat-show-host James Corden, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn and tennis great Billie Jean King.
"We need everyone to invest in women’s sports and Ilana [Kloss] and I are proud to stand with the Angel City FC ownership group and help make new history in Southern California sports," King said.
"Angel City's mission to make an impact on and off the field, and to provide an opportunity to some of the best professional female athletes in the world to play on a stage as powerful as Los Angeles, sends a strong message to young girls in the community and beyond.”
