RFU allow transgender women to continue playing despite World Rugby ban
The Rugby Football Union will allow transgender women to continue playing community rugby after asking for more scientific evidence before imposing a global ban.
World Rugby announced last week it would prevent transgender women from competing in elite rugby, stating "safety and fairness" could not be assured following a three-stage review.
However, the RFU wants to find a way to let transgender women compete in contact rugby domestically whilst further work is done to find a safe framework for the sport below the elite level.
A statement said: "The RFU does not currently plan to adopt World Rugby transgender guidelines as it belives further scientific evidence is required alongside detailed consideration of less restrictive measures in relation to the eligibility of transgender players.
"The RFU will also undertake further consultation with players in the women's game to understand their views. The RFU is committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion as well as safety and fairness across all levels of the game."
