Women's Super League review: Chelsea beat City but Arsenal and Everton remain out in front

Chelsea benefitted from a controversial penalty decision on their way to a 3-1 win against Manchester City in the Barclays Women's Super League. Maren Mjelde opened the scoring from the spot after the referee showed a yellow card to Ellen White even though the ball struck teammate Demi Stokes in front of her.

City had been well in the game up to that point but further goals for Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby saw the Blues home and up to third in the table.

Above them, Arsenal and Everton both maintained their 100 percent starts to the league season. The Gunners were 5-0 winners at Brighton, a tally which included the 48th and 49th goals in 50 WSL appearances for Vivienne Miedema as well as a first-ever professional goal for Lotte Wubben-Moy. 

Everton beat West Ham 3-1 thanks to goals from Nicolene Sorensen and two for substitute Lucy Graham. The result leaves the Hammers still waiting for their first win of the season with a return of just one point from four fixtures.

Birmingham were able to claim their first points of the season with a 1-0 victory at Reading, Claudia Walker scoring the only goal of the game.

On Saturday, Christen Press and Tobin Heath started together for Manchester United for the first time and helped their side to a 1-0 win against Tottenham. Heath set up Millie Turner for the solitary strike. The result leaves Spurs, who are still waiting for Alex Morgan to be fit enough to feature, in eighth place with just one point out of a possible 12 and leaders Arsenal up next in Sunday's North London derby.

Aston Villa's match against Bristol City was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak, the pair propping up the table without a point between them.
