It was a night of drama and concern in the Women’s Super League, as Manchester United took a big step toward the title but England captain Leah Williamson limped off with a worrying injury.

The game with title challengers Arsenal was decided by an Alessio Russo strike on the stroke of half-time, calmly converting a lovely cutback from Nikita Parris.

The victory moved United four points clear at the top and seriously dampened Arsenal’s title dreams, although Chelsea remain in a strong position. The Blues have two games in hand on United as we enter the final few weeks of the season.

When the WSL concludes, all football focus will shift to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which kicks-off on July 20. England are one of the favourites for the competition and open up with a group game against Haiti on July 22, followed by ties with Denmark and China.

After leading the team to a brilliant victory in the Euros, Williamson is massively important to England’s success and her obvious distress when her leg buckled early in the game left the stadium in a concerned hush.

It is testament to the growth of women’s football that Williamson worries over the coming days will bring comparisons to the metatarsal sagas of Beckham and Rooney in years gone by.
