Alexandra Popp pens new three-year contract with Wolfsburg
It’s a done deal in Germany as Wolfsburg women’s team captain Alexandra Popp has signed a new three-year deal with the club, keeping her with the German national team until 2025.
The 31-year-old striker has been with the German side since 2012 and has won seven Bundesliga titles and two Champions League.
The Germany’s international current contract with the club was already in line to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season, but Popp’s now opted to commit her long-term future with the German side. With this, Popp’s currently back at 6.00 odds with best online casino to finish as the league’s top scorer this season.
"I'm very happy about the recognition and feel extremely comfortable at VfL Wolfsburg," said Popp. "When I look back on the last few years, I'm simply at the best club in Germany.
"I also see outstanding quality in our team and I really enjoy playing with these girls on and off the pitch and fighting for more titles.”
Popp was an integral part of the Germany women's side that reached the Euro 2022 final in England during the summer, finishing as the tournament’s joint top scorer with six goals to her name. Having hit a brace in the semi finals against France, it was heartbreaking for her and the team as well as their faithful fans to see her miss out on a place in the final through injury of which her team later lost to England.
She remains a huge figure in German football, with 59 goals in 119 appearances for her country.
Securing Popp's services for another three years sees the She Wolves continue to strengthen ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, having already bolstered their squad with the signings of fellow German internationals Jule Brand, Merle Frohms and Marina Hegering earlier this year.
"Alex is one of the most influential personalities in football, not only in Germany but worldwide," added Wolfsburg sporting director, Ralf Kellermann. "Even if she has gained popularity since the European Championships, we have long appreciated her great qualities on the pitch and as a leading player.
"In addition, with her strong mentality and her unbridled thirst for success, Alex is a role model for our young players and also an important part of our squad in this role.
"I am therefore extremely happy that Alex will continue on the path that has been successful with us for at least a decade until at least 2025.”
