Done Deal: Chelsea completes signing of Jelena Cankovic from Rosengard
It’s yet another done deal in West London with Chelsea FC finally completing the signing of Jelena Cankovic from Rosengard ahead of the 2022/23 WSL season.
The midfielder - who was reportedly on WSL rivals Arsenal FC - has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the West London club, keeping her at Kingsmeadow until 2025.
Her move to Chelsea would serve as a huge boost to the Arsenal Ladies, who were Sports betting favourites to win the race for her signature.
The 27-year-old Serbian midfielder is Chelsea’s sixth summer signing of the window, following the arrivals of Kadeisha Buchanan, Eve Perisset, Katerina Svitkova, Lucy Watson and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
"I am really excited to join Chelsea and it feels great to be able to play in a team with such a winning culture and great players," said Cankovic. "I am looking forward to seeing the fans and playing in front of them."
Cankovic had been with his former side since 2019, winning with the team the Damallsvenkan title twice during her time in Sweden. Cankovic had previously represented Vajxo, Ferencvaros, Spartak Subotica and Barcelona, and has won league titles in all four countries that she has played in.
Cankovic has been capped 29 times at international level by Serbia since making her debut in 2013. She will wear the number 28 shirt at Chelsea during the 2022/23 WSL season, as the Blues attempt to defend their league title for an unprecedented fourth season on the trot.
"Jelena is a top talent who has been developing really, really well in Sweden," added Emma Hayes. "We’ve been monitoring her for some time and we’re absolutely delighted she chose us.
"I think her creativity in the midfield is something that will add to our team. She’s really switched on and I think she’s going to be a wonderful addition."
