Bristol Bears build around their international core

As they continue to build up to the start of the new Premier 15s season, Bristol Bears Women head coach Kim Oliver has been assessing the strengths of the core of English and Welsh internationals she is constructing her squad around.

The Red Roses quartet of Amber Reed, Sarah Bern, Clara Nielson and Rownita Marston had already committed to remain at the club before Oliver started to recruit for the new campaign.

“I’m delighted that all four girls have committed to Bristol Bears Women ahead of the 2020/21 campaign," she told bristolbearsrugby.com.

“They’re all an absolute pleasure to coach with all four bring in different strengths to the playing group and driving the standards in their own unique way."

If the coach is excited to going again ahead of the new campaign then so are the players. Marston said: “Every player I have played alongside in a Bears shirt has helped shape me into the player I am today and I’m grateful for that.

“I’m excited to see how much further I can develop alongside those who push me to be my best.”

Wales star Courtney Keight is the latest arrival, one of five new signings.  Oliver explained why she fits the profile of player the Bears are looking for: “Courtney is a young, enthusiastic player with a tremendous work ethic whose talent is beginning to be recognised with international honours.

“Not only is she the type of player we’re looking to add to our group, but she is also the type of person we want at the club and I can’t wait for her to link up with the group at the start of pre-season.”

International team mates Alicia Butchers, Natalia John, Jasmine Joyce and Kayleigh Powell have also travelled across the Severn.

Oliver has also been keen to keep together a strong contingent of emerging talent, including six England Under 20 players. “Young homegrown players are at the core of the Bristol Bears vision, so it’s great to retain this group of talented youngsters, who have very bright futures in our game," Oliver said.
