The club behind three England legends
If you are flicking through the TV channels, wondering where to take your evening viewing, a brilliant new film on the BBC could be the answer.
‘We Are England – England's Next Lionesses’ is available on the BBC iPlayer and tells the delightful story of Boldon Girls, a club established in 1992 by Paul Smith and based in South Tyneside, which has produced three players for the national team.
Jill Scott, Steph Houghton and Demi Stokes all began their football journey with Boldon and Scott has made a return visit to the club that launched three outstanding careers at the top of the game.
Scott told the BBC: "I don't think I'd have gone on to play for England without Paul," she says during the film.
"I got told at the age of nine that I couldn't play with the boys any more. I had to go and find a girls' team. That was when I found Boldon and met Paul Smith.
"Paul used to pick us up, take us to training. Those are my happiest memories - getting up dead early on a Saturday, playing football, travelling around with the girls having such a laugh."
It is a magical watch and available to view now.
