England win Euro 2022 in brilliant final
For the first time in 56 years, England has won a major football tournament.
In a final packed with tension, the Lionesses secured an extra-time victory over Germany to secure Women’s Euro 22 title at a sold-out Wembley.
England started brightly and Ellen White went close with a header at the back post but the German side settled and an almighty scramble was finally gobbled up by home custodian Mary Earps, who was impeccable all night.
The early stages of the second period were controlled by Germany and England manager Sarina Wiegman turned to replacements Ella Toone and Alessia Russo to galvanise her team.
Within three minutes, midfield maestro Keira Walsh curled a wonderful pass into the path of Toone, who held her nerve to brilliantly lob German goalkeeper Merle Frohms.
Wembley went wild but there was a response. Lina Magull thundered a shot against the post and then found her target on 79 minutes, calmly steering a low cross into the roof of the net.
The extra-time story was two exhausted sides desperately trying to find that one last chance. England won a corner, the ball dropped in the six-yard box and Chloe Kelly poked in the iconic goal, prompting a celebration that will be remembered forever.
Beth Mead was named Player of the Tournament before England captain Leah Williamson lifted the trophy to make a nation proud.
