Euro 2022 qualifiers: Northern Ireland reach play-offs but Scotland and Wales are out
Northern Ireland recovered from conceding an early goal to beat the Faroe Islands 5-1 and secure second place in Group C and with it a play-off for a place at Euro 2022 in England.
Kenny Shiels' side have never qualified for a major tournament and had to win their last four qualifying matches to stand any chance of getting through - a feat they managed to acheive.
The result was enough to finish runners-up behind Norway in their group and pip Wales to the play-offs despite a 3-0 victory for the Welsh against Belarus. The two home nations finished level on points, Wales having a vastly superior goal difference but Northern Ireland having the edge with a slightly better head-to-head record.
Scotland can also no longer qualify after suffering a shock defeat at home to Finland. Their remaining two fixtures are now dead rubbers as the Scots can no longer catch the Finns or Portugal ahead of them.
