European Qualifiers round-up: Victory for Northern Ireland but woes for Welsh and Scots
Northern Ireland maintained their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2022 with a 1-0 victory in Belarus despite having their goalkeeper sent off and spending most of the match down to 10 players.
Jacqueline Burns was shown a straight red card for her lunge on Anastaysia Shcherbachenia with 27 minutes on the clock. But Rachael Furness nodded Northern Ireland in front shortly before half-time and the side were able to hold on for the win which lifts them up to third in their qualifying group behind Wales and Norway.
Those two sides met in Cardiff, with group leaders Norway coming away victorious 1-0 thanks to Frida Maanum's second-half goal. Despite the result, it was a positive display from Wales, who had two late penalty appeals turned down.
Norway have confirmed qualification for the delayed finals in England. Although they remain second in the group for now, Wales will have to better Northern Ireland's results in their remaining qualifying games to finish runners-up due to a slightly worse head-to-head record.
Scotland suffered a first defeat of their qualifying campaign, losing 1-0 in Finland - a result which leaves them four points behind the Finns although they do have a game in hand.
