The Premier League has provided £1million towards coronavirus testing to ensure the new Women's Super League and Championship seasons can go ahead in September.

The current campaign was cancelled in March and there were fears the prohibitive cost of new safety measures to combat Covid-19 would jeopardize any potential restart.

But Premier League chief executive Richard Masters told the Department of Culture, Media & Sport select committee new funding has now been put in place.

"We have been able to help the women's game to the tune of around £1million to help them get their testing programme up and running," he said.

"So we have recently made that funding gesture to them and I believe on that basis they are able to restart the 20/21 season."
