England manager, Phil Neville, has been accused of showing a lack of respect towards women's football by Lionesses star, Fara Williams.

Neville is leaving the national job when his contract expires next summer, deciding to step down ahead of both the delayed Euro 2021 tournament and Tokyo Olympics.

Williams was angered when the former England and Manchester United defender suggested the women's game allowed him to "cut his teeth" before getting a coaching job in men's football.

Speaking to beIn Sports, Neville said: "My plan was always just to go for the three years and then get into the day-to-day running of a club job, which would be what I wanted to do."

With 172 caps, Williams has played more times for England than any other player and was picked by Neville as recently as last September, although she missed out on selection for the SheBelieves Cup earlier this year.

"I was hurt by those comments," she told Sky Sports News. "I am no longer with that squad but I certainly know what it means to me to play for England. I know what it means for the girls there currently, staff that are there currently [and] were there before."
